Museums and Historic Sites

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
is in the Tucson Mountain County Park, west of the city. It is a combination zoo, botanical garden, and museum, focusing on native local wildlife.

The Arizona Historical Society has four museums in the Tucson area: the Arizona History Museum (Tucson), the Downtown History Museum, the Fort Lowell History Museum, and the Sosa-Carrillo-Fremont House Museum.

The Old Tucson Studios is not a museum, but it is a historic site, sort of. This was a Hollywood movie set where many old classic western movies and some more recent westerns were shot. It is open to tour most weekends for a fee.

Biosphere 2:
This facility, now owned by the University of Arizona, was originally started to study methods of surviving in large, sealed environments. After the studies were finished the Biosphere 2 buildings, greenhouses, and other grounds were sold. There are tours available. Check the Biosphere 2 site for details.

Titan Missile Museum:
This former Titan II missile silo in Sahuarita is now a National Historic Landmark, and a museum. Short, medium, and long tours are available for a view into the Cold War past. This silo was decommissioned in the 1980s, and displays a launch site for the 1960s and 1970s era nuclear weapon. The museum includes an inert Titan II missile and dummy warhead, launch control, and the crew quarters. This site was once a remote facility of Davis-Monthan AFB.

Pima Air & Space Museum:
This museum is adjacent to the Davis-Monthan AFB grounds. It is a privately funded museum, which preserves a large number of historic airplanes. There are several daily tours of the exhibits, which includes a B-29 Superfortress, B-36 Peacemaker, SR-71 Thunderbolt II "Warthog," and many other important models.

The Tucson Museum of Art, in downtown Tucson, features permanent collections on the art of the American West, Latin America, modern and contemporary art, and a rare books collection.
